Yesterday we got up at the crack of dawn (5:30am on a day off!) and headed to Girdwood with some Arctic Valley people for a day of cat skiing. The forecast was for snow showers early in the day then partly cloudy skies. Fortunately, the forecast was wrong and it was a beautiful day!
Originally, I had not planned on going because I have not skied much this year and wasn't sure if it would be fun if I was out of skiing shape. John and I had a deal that if I didn't ski enough this year, he could go with someone else and I wasn't allowed to be mad (this was a very generous gift from some of the AV board members last year so JRW and I could spend some time together). Long story short, I decided I wanted to go because I hate being left out of the fun. So off we went! I went fully expecting to make a few runs and then quit because I was sure my legs couldn't handle a full day of skiing. I was right. I went with the every other run method and ended up making four runs. The snow was pretty good in some spots and super crusty in others (crust = my mortal enemy). It was hard work but definitely fun just to be outside enjoying the sunshine.
I got to ride in the front seat of the cat on the runs that I sat out. That part might have been better than the skiing part!
Here are some shots from the day:
