Depression in hypothyroidism is high and a recent study set out to determine a better TSH value for hypothyroidism based on symptoms of depression. The study looked at 174 hypothyroid patients and used the Beck depression test to determine symptoms. Scores of less than 10 were considered healthy and scores over 10 were considered depressed. The optimal cut off value for TSH was 2.5.
Protein intake benefits bone health. The study found that a protein-rich diet in the presence of adequate calcium is beneficial to bone health and found that there was no evidence that "acid load" due to higher protein intake is damaging to bone health. The myth that too much protein causes acid load can be detrimental to the development and maintenance of bone health in both growing children and the elderly. Specifically in the elderly, the problem is often not enough protein not too much.
New research has quantified the relationship between a lack of paid sick leave and poverty in the US. Working adults without paid sick leave are three times more likely to have income levels that are below the poverty line. The findings of this research also show that people who have no paid sick leave are more likely to need welfare services.
