Safer Skincare: Shower Edition

If you've read any of my other posts on this topic, then you know that I'm a pretty big fan of Primally Pure and Beautycounter when it comes to safer skincare products. Even though my shower is also quickly becoming full of Beautycounter products, I do still have a few other brands that I use and love, so I wanted to share what's in my shower!

Safer Shower Products

Shampoo & Conditioner

Beautycounter

The Daily Shampoo and Conditioner are my go to right now. Beautycounter also has a newer line of shampoo and conditioner that I have not used, but have heard good things about them. The daily shampoo and conditioner (which I do not use daily...I wash my hair twice a week or less...) smells amazing and lathers up nicely (except for when my hair is really dirty). I would say that it works more like conventional shampoo and conditioner but is made without a lot of the icky and toxic ingredients that are in those.

Maple Holistics

I was contacted by this company many months ago and they asked if they could send me a free bottle of one of their shampoos to try. After doing some reading about the company, I accepted (I don't take all of the free product offers I receive, I only accept those that I believe would be a good fit for me and for you)!

I was prepared to be underwhelmed, because as anyone who has tried a number of "natural" products knows, most of them really aren't all that great. There are a lot of good ones out there, but I have found that most just don't work the way I want them to. Which is why I was thrilled when I used this shampoo and had great results!

I tried the Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (you can get a free sample of a product here) and was amazed at how well it lathered (not a requirement for me for a shampoo, but I'm always surprised when natural shampoos have a good lather), it didn't leave any weird residue, and it helped with my occasional itchy scalp! I didn't notice any change in my hair when using it compared to using other products I love, which is a good thing, I use the products I use because I like the way they make my hair feel and behave...in this case, change would have been bad)!

Tea tree shampoo would be a great option for you if you have any sort of itchy or dry scalp condition. The directions on the bottle say to lather it up and let it sit for a minute or two. I'm usually too impatient to do things like that, so I didn't ever let it sit. A 2002 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that when a group of male and female participants used a shampoo with a 5% concentration of tea tree oil over a four-week period, nearly half experienced a significant decline in dandruff.  There are also studies that suggest that tea tree oil may be helpful in the treatment and prevention of head lice (please talk with your doctor if you think you have lice).

Don't forget to get your free sample here and let me know what you think!

Soap & Body Wash

Everyone Soap

This is a brand that I have used for a while, I started with their body lotion and hand soap. Right now we have the kids soap in our shower because I wanted the tropical coconut scent and that, apparently, only comes in the kids version...oh well! This is a great all around soap that ranks well on the EWG database. It has one ingredient that is a 3, but everything else is a 1 or 2 (which is great). And it smells good.

My boyfriend uses this as his all over soap and I tend to use it instead when I shave.

Beautycounter Citrus Mimosa Bar

I use the Beautycounter Citrus Mimosa Bar as my all over soap in the shower. It smells amazing (very citrusy and not too girly) and if you keep the bar in a dry place in the shower it lasts for a long time. I also have the citrus mimosa body wash in my swim bag and use when I get out of the pool. It definitely makes me stop smelling like chlorine and keeps my skin from drying out and shriveling up! Be careful though, because a little goes a long way! I've found that if I use too much it's actually pretty hard to rinse off. So start with just a tiny bit.

There you have it! Those are my picks for safer skincare options in the shower! I tend to keep things pretty simple when it comes to personal care products, so I don't have a ton of things that I use, which is why it's so important for me to find things that work well!
