Make Time for What Matters

I just wanted to write a quick post about what's going on in my life right now. As I sit down to write this, I am eight (yes 8!) clinical hours away from completing my master's program. I started the program with over 500 hours left to complete and this semester I was required to complete 224 of those hours. So, this is big.

This also explains why I've been a little absent from social media this week. In addition to being in the final weeks for training for my first triathlon, I have needed to focus all my energy on completing my clinical hours. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people who is motivated to go harder as I get closer to the end. It gets harder for me to finish things the closer to "done" I get.

I thought this brought up an interesting point. While all of the things I do in my life are important to me (as they should be) sometimes you need to make time for what matters right now. No one can do it all, so it's important to shift your focus in order to complete your goals.

Making time for what matters sometimes includes doing things you don't want to to do in order to meet your goals. I hear all the time that people don't have time for exercise or to cook healthy meals, but that they desperately want to lose weight. If it's important to you, you'll make time for it. If you can't make time for it, it might not actually be that important to you right now. I rarely want to spend an hour in the kitchen prepping meals on Sunday, but I know I'll make bad choices and then feel icky if I don't make some effort to have healthy meals and snacks for the days I am at work or school.

Sometimes making time for what matters involves blowing off school work for an afternoon and going to sit in the sunshine in the mountains because that's what you know you need in order to carry on for the rest of the week (that's how I spent my Saturday afternoon).

What matters today might not be what mattered yesterday and may be completely different from what will matter tomorrow. It's ok to shift your focus and perspective as that changes in order to reach your goals!

How do you make time for what matters?
