2013 disneyland half marathon: weeks 1, 2, and 3

My next race is the Disneyland Half Marathon at the end of August.  That's the race where I currently hold my half marathon PR...so I'm looking for another one this year!  Here's what I've been up to running-wise over the past few weeks (weeks 1 and 2 were pretty slim related to marathon recovery...)

Week 1 (6/23):

3 mi @ 11:30-12:36 - done @ 12:00

For some reason I had a hard time hitting this pace.  Seems weird since I feel like it's the perfect slow pace.  I ended up having to run on the trails at APU (i.e. hills) in order to stay in the zone.

Tuesday:
4 mi w/ 2x1600@ tempo
Hot Yoga

I ended up switching my workouts around so I could try hot yoga.  A bunch of my work friends have been going and I have wanted to try it (who knows why a girl who hates to be hot would purposely stick herself in a room that's 105 degrees and then workout).  It was ok...and I definitely sweat a lot.  Several people have told me that they hated it when they first started, but now they love it.  I don't know that I'll ever love it, but it seems like a good compliment to all the other tortures I put my body through.

Wednesday:

4 mi w/ 2mi @ tempo - 3.6 mi @11:02 (11:58, 9:11, 10:46, 10:42)

I just realized that I completely mis-read this workout.  The previous week was a similar workout with 2 mi @ 8:59-9:05, I apparently got confused and missed that tempo pace was 9:42-9:48...oops!  Well, either way I didn't quite make it.  It was quite warm even though we left the house at 9:30am.  By the time I was done it was 70 degrees.  Kiva was dragging and I was super thirsty.  I know I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, but I'm kind of over this summer.

Kiva and I ventured out into the woods, where I thought it would be cooler.  It wasn't.  We did enjoy our jaunt in the woods, but I don't think either one of us enjoyed overheating (it was 72 degrees at 9:30am)!  Kiva almost caught her first small game while we were out...a shrew or vole ran across the trail and she dove into the woods after it.  Fortunately, it got away.  She was sad, but I'm not sure I want to deal with the consequences of her eating a whole (although small) animal.
